In 2010, I launched a dream business with a partner — Trinity Cycles, in Hartbeespoortdam, South Africa.
We had vision, passion, and a solid plan.
But we didn’t have one crucial thing: money.
So we did what many entrepreneurs do:
We accepted an investor loan of R500,000.
It felt like a breakthrough.
What we didn’t realise was this:
We had agreed to repay R1,275,000 over five years.
We hadn’t read the fine print.
We hadn’t counted the true cost.
And that single decision would shape our business journey with unnecessary strain.
📘 LESSON 1: Always read the fine print
Every contract you sign has consequences — for your business, your freedom, and your future. We were so excited to start, we didn’t slow down to protect what we were building.
Today, my advice is simple: get professional help before signing anything. Don’t let enthusiasm blind you to risk.
📉 LESSON 2: Growth means nothing without margin
Trinity Cycles grew fast:
R500k in Year 1
R800k in Year 2
Over R1.8m in Year 3
From the outside, we looked successful.
But internally, we were bleeding.
The loan repayments devoured our cash flow.
We couldn’t breathe, reinvest, or move freely.
We weren’t building a business — we were surviving a burden.
🚫 LESSON 3: Debt is the enemy of freedom
I no longer believe that debt is a neutral tool.
Debt steals your peace, your creativity, and your ability to lead with vision.
It places pressure where there should be clarity.
It creates urgency where there should be patience.
It invites shortcuts where there should be wisdom.
If you want to live with purpose and build something that lasts:
👉 Avoid debt.
👉 Grow with discipline.
👉 Delay gratification and build margin.
Financial freedom starts with financial clarity — not credit.
❤️ Why I’m Sharing This
If you’re building something, I want you to win.
Not just on the balance sheet — but in your heart, your family, and your purpose.
If I could go back, I’d do it differently.
And if my story helps you do it right the first time — it’s worth sharing.
✅ Read every contract.
✅ Don’t rush into loans.
✅ Stay debt-free and focused.
✅ Build with margin, integrity, and long-term thinking.
You don’t have to learn the hard way.
You can learn from mine.
