In July 2021, South Africa watched as parts of KwaZulu-Natal were engulfed in chaos.
Over 45,000 businesses affected.
More than 129,000 jobs at risk.
Over R16 billion in damages.
And behind those numbers?
People.
Mothers. Fathers. Breadwinners. Entrepreneurs.
Dreams reduced to rubble. Futures torched.
Like many, I was stunned — not just by the scale of destruction, but by the silence that followed. It felt unreal. But it was real. It was brutal. And for thousands, it was life-altering.
Now, here’s the question I keep asking myself — and that I want to challenge you with:
What will you do when everything you’ve built is taken away?
Because if you’ve ever built anything meaningful, you’ll know:
Success isn’t about never falling.
It’s about how fiercely you get up when you do.
Let me tell you the story of Soichiro Honda.
He was told no repeatedly.
Lost contracts. Bombed factories. Stripped titles.
He even sold the remains of his business to Toyota just to survive.
But he didn’t quit.
He started again.
In a shack. With 12 men.
Building motorized bicycles from scraps.
That became Honda.
He didn’t wait for perfect conditions. He built through chaos.
That’s what separates the few who rise from the many who freeze.
Not intelligence. Not luck. But grit.
So here’s what I believe:
The 99% will say,
“It’s over. South Africa is broken. Nothing will change.”
But I say this to the 1%:
You will rebuild.
You will create jobs.
You will innovate.
You will lead South Africa into a better future.
Because our nation doesn’t need more victims — it needs builders.
And our story isn’t done. Not even close.
The question is not “Will South Africa recover?” — the real question is:
Will you rise? Or will you retreat?
Let’s be the ones who choose action.
Who choose faith over fear.
Who build when others break.
Let’s show the world what South African resilience looks like.
Are you in?
